Woods
With Light and With Love - WOODSIST
FILTER Grade: 83%

By Kyle MacKinnel on April 15, 2014

Woods

In 2014, Woods still stand tall, having morphed from a lo-fi weirdo electric folk band on their own fringe label into a veritable lighthouse on the now populous independent coast. Scratchy four-tracks and G. Lucas Crane’s tape manipulations in the decaying Rear House have been swapped out for Jarvis Taveniere’s very well-aging studio prowess and a pared down four-piece configuration. The thrust of this band begins and has always begun with Jeremy Earl’s mastery at cranking out tight songs, and With Light and With Love is chock full of ’em. Check “Moving To the Left,” “New Light” and “Leaves Like Glass.” In Woods, we have choice.

LIVE: Blood Orange At The El Rey (4/14/14)

LIVE: Blood Orange At The El Rey (4/14/14)

Aside from an encore or two, Blood Orange’s sold-out El Rey show supporting his latest album, Cupid Deluxe, left nothing more to be desired.

A DJ set from Kindness opened with a mellow prelude to a much-anticipated performance by the NYC-based artist. By the time the curtains lifted to reveal Dev Hynes and his band onstage, the theater was packed with a diverse crowd donning outfits befitting French New Wave stars or In Living Color’s Fly Girls. Indeed, the show was not only well-attended, but the crowd was also notably well-dressed. Hynes’s band was a bevy of beautiful people with exceptionally good hair. Donning a leather cap, red button-down shirt, and a pair of well-worn jeans, Hynes worked the crowd with an easy charisma, his energy and force palpable despite his quiet humility. Crooning behind backup singer or sitting beside his drummer, he seemed equally awed by fellow band mates as we were of him. Hynes delivered the requisite jaw-dropping guitar solos and fluid Michael Jackson-meets-Pina-Bausch dance moves, drawing screaming applause.

LIVE: Julian Casablancas and The Voidz Showcase New Material at The Roxy

Last time Julian Casablancas debuted new solo material in Los Angeles, he played a four-night residency at the Palace Theatre downtown complete with resplendent moving backdrops and costume changes. This time around, he went a little simpler. Casablancas and his new band The Voidz announced Friday night's show at West Hollywood's 500-capacity Roxy Theatre just two days prior, and it sold out in minutes. Needless to say, those in attendance came ready to party.
