The Minus 5

In the canon of the great Scott McCaughey (115 bands played in, 71,000 albums released), the new Minus 5 effort, Killingsworth, falls on the mellower side of the vast spectrum. This is due perhaps to the inclusion of women into the usually testosterone-heavy band lineup. Fellow Portlanders, The Shee Bee Gees, add a touch of fair sex subtly to the mix, which—thanks to The Decemberists, usual suspects P. Buck and K. Stringfellow and others—percolates with mellotron, pedal steel and something called a marxophone. The songs are as charming as expected, with titles like “The Disembowelers” and “The Lurking Barrister,” and there’s more acoustic guitar and sing-a-longs than the Maker’s Mark-soaked rocking that we know McCaughey to be capable of. And that’s fine; we’ll take him any way we can get him.
