She & Him

Since the inception of She & Him back in 2006, Zooey Deschanel has gone from Hollywood’s best-kept secret to a run-of-the-mill sitcom star. While Deschanel has become overexposed on the small screen, Volume 3, the latest offering from the “New Girl” and M. Ward reminds us all that Deschanel’s got some pipes…and a couple of serious grudges. The album almost follows the same musical checklist as the first two She & Him volumes—layered Deschanel vocals, doo-wop beats, a couple of covers thrown in, plus an always surprising appearance of Ward’s gravelly voice—but 3 shows a slightly darker side of the squeaky-clean She. With lyrics like “You and I told a story of love from our hearts/But it never came true/There’s no tomorrow for me and you,” it’s hard not to hear the final retort of Dechanel’s short-lived marriage to Ben Gibbard within the saccharine melodies; it’s just sad to know there is so much truth behind them.
