Part of the artist’s struggle involves grappling with the constraints of time. Ain’t no thang for Julian Lynch. Alongside graduate studies in ethnomusicology, Lynch has conjured up two excellent records in as many years. On Terra, the root system of 2010’s Mare has given way to lush vegetation. The lilting piano of “Fort Collins” sounds light years removed from the hologram clarinet of “Ground,” yet all voices here are fluent in the same language. Despite all the buzz and pull, Lynch makes music that exists on its own terms.
