Poliça

Like a musical Frankenstein’s monster (and perhaps just as Gothic), Poliça are assembled from an assortment of separate parts. Sewn together by GAYNGS/Roma Di Luna singer Channy Leaneagh, Vampire Hands bassist Chris Bierden and drummers Drew Christopherson (Digitata) and Ben Ivascu (Marijuana Deathsquads), the band makes its official introduction to the greater public with Give You the Ghost. Produced by GAYNGS bandleader Ryan Olson and Spoon’s Jim Eno, the album is extensively beat-driven with clean R&B rhythms and melodic basslines throughout (particularly on grooving “Dark Star”). Yet what most listeners will be paying the greatest attention to is its digital element, namely the effects-heavy manipulation and Auto-Tune of Leaneagh’s voice. While it usage starts strong on opener “Amongster,” establishing the tone and direction of the entire album, it starts losing its nuance halfway through, creating a distraction from the effort as a whole.
