Lissie Maurus (born and raised in Rock Island, Illinois) owns a towering, radio-ready set of pipes, with just the right amount of grit. The same balance is struck on her new LP. Catching a Tiger follows 2009’s promising EP, Why You Runnin’, a fitting introduction to the songwriter’s PBR-soaked purr. This 12-song set works best when Maurus is digging in the darker mud of Americana. She’s successfully covered Lady Gaga on YouTube, so the non-EP cuts clearly have studio shimmer. Her Midwest-pop works on the plaintive piano ballad “Bully.” Even current BBC Radio hit “When I’m Alone” is better than the country-rock we’re subjected to Stateside. Conversely, “Stranger” mines ‘60s girl groups with dire outcomes and “Cuckoo” apes generic Sheryl Crow songcraft. Enough said. Maurus still possesses a daring will, as evidenced by electronic experiment “Worried About.” Cohesion will come soon; she’s got all the nuts and bolts.
