Holloys

Every so often, some wiseguy will make the bold claim that it has been ages since Los Angeles has had a proper music scene, or a local sound to call its own. But anyone who makes that statement hasn’t been paying attention, because Holloys—making a proper debut with Suns Lungs, released on their own label—are part of a wave of bands capturing the riotous energy of a youthful, urban L.A. That restlessness is everywhere on Suns Lungs: in the Afro-pop brass of album opener “#25,” in the synthy ‘80s-inspired “Change Your Lover” and even in the instrumental vignette “Poopshadow” (yes, that’s really the title) with its video-games-in-outer-space glitchiness. There’s also a punk ethos that comes to full view by the time album closer “Rebirth” rolls around, with frontman Jim Brown proclaiming it’s “time for our rebirth / It’s time to raise a ruckus.” And damn if this young Angeleno didn’t find herself inspired to do just that.
