L.A. sunshine doesn’t exactly inspire tales of Ultravox-ian alienation and paranoia. So here’s Class Actress, with Elizabeth Harper lamenting contemporary horrors like getting her ass off to work. (“Bring on the weekend!” she rallies. Seriously, girl.) Still, the music is alive with all the right synth-pop touchstones: lots of mournful, ersatz orchestration; creepy, disfigured melodic overlays; and muscular funk undercurrents. Now relocated to Brooklyn, one hopes Carlos D will step in with Ballard books and a dusty bottle of Soviet vodka—no telling what might result.
