The title may sound like a joke, but the contents fulfill its outspoken purpose. It’s a public offering—the title the recommendation (or warning), the music the method of fulfillment. Chill. Why? Because you forget your loved ones, but remember your cell phone and social media feeds? Not enough living room lounging—time with no intention? Hard to tell. Regardless, Canning has delivered here his most personally stylized record to date, offering the psychedelic guitar washes and ambient effects understandably overshadowed on pop-tending Broken Social Scene recordings. He’s taken a sharply intimate and original turn from his debut solo effort and the result is a catalogue of 14 —surprise!— super-chill tunes, consistent front to back, although none necessarily a standout. But listen for a minute and Canning’s gentler-than-ever vocals alongside the wave-like processions of pure acoustics—with some electronic, ethereal tidbits—force an attentive relaxation, a forgettable trance. In this regard, YG2C hits its intended mark.
