There’s no denying Awol One’s got talent and creativity—the spooky, animated-sketchbook video for “Celebrate” is testament to that, and makes the song more appealing. But even with a coterie of collaborators like Aesop Rock, Tha Alkaholiks, producer Factor, and a solid hip-hop history, it’s hard to get down with his flow. From the stoner-clever titles to excessive round vowel sounds (“If you’re down/for your crown”), lazy, warbling vocals, and obvious lyrics (“It’s not the destination, it’s the journey we should love”—oh tell us more, Mr. High School Guidance Counselor), it’s obvious why he resonates with the super-white indie hip-hop kids who like to wear their caps sideways and drawl “’Sup” out the corners of their mouths. The most satisfying track on the album is “Brains Out,” and that’s mainly because executive producer Xzibit gives it a much-needed bite with his style and delivery. Unfortunately, when it comes to the Owl Hours, you’re better off staying asleep.
