WATCH: Sigur Rós Gets Dark and Heavy in “Brennisteinn,” First Single Off Upcoming LP “Kveikur”

Just 14 months after the release of the atmospheric, dreamlike Valtari, Icelandic band Sigur Rós have shared the characteristically cryptic video for “Brennisteinn,” the first single off their upcoming LP Kveikur, out June 18 via XL Recordings. Kveikur was self-produced by the band—now a three-piece following the departure of multi-instrumentalist Kjartan Sveinsson. If “Brennisteinn” is any indication of what to expect from Kveikur, Jónsi Birgisson, Georg Holm and Orri Páll Dýrason have shifted towards a more direct, turbulent sound.

The nearly eight-minute “Brennisteinn” blends Sigur Rós’ signature falsetto swoops and sweeping strings with aggressive, menacing guitars. The song’s video, directed by Andrew Huang, is a gothic allegory of sorts. As the band performs, a group of people drags a monster and subsequently tears it apart, only to reveal brightly colored entrails. Another beast then chases them off, and we are all left scratching our heads. Visually, however, it’s very exciting, with neon dreadlocks and dancing plumes of smoke mixed in with the black and white footage. Make sense of it all for yourself and watch the video below.

Lastly, be sure to check out Sigur Rós' tour schedule in support of Kveikur, which kicks off with a show at Madison Square Garden on Monday, and to catch the trio on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon tonight!
