SXSW Spotlight: She & Him

While this week might be Spring Break for college kids bound for Cabo, it’s arguably the holiest time of the year for music lovers—that’s right, it’s South By Southwest. To help prep for your SXSW experience, FILTER is bringing you a taste of the Austin festival’s must-see musicians each day this week in the form of excerpts, interviews, and even a tattoo giveaway. So take some time out from mapping your road-trip, rest those cowboy boots and brush up on SXSW’s top-tier performers.

To kick off SXSW week, we’re highlighting the lovely duo that graces the cover of FILTER’s latest Good Music GuideZooey Deschanel and M.Ward, the folk-pop songbirds behind She & Him. In celebration of their second album together—appropriately titled Volume Two—She & Him is headlining the FILTER presented Dickies Sounds @ SXSW Event March 19 at Lustre Pearl. Swing by to hear new tracks off Volume Two, which doesn’t hit stores until March 23.

Here, Deschanel discusses how a spark of inspiration can go a long way:

“I had a little interview with Brian Wilson maybe a year and a half ago. He inspired me to do certain things—technical things—in terms of layering harmonies. One of the songs I had written on ukulele, but I ended up recording all these vocal harmonies and taking the ukulele out and then it was just a cappella when I sent it to Matt [Ward]. We ended up recording it that way.”

In addition to the Good Music Guide, you can read more about Deschanel and Ward's latest collaboration in issue #39 of FILTER Magazine, currently available on newsstands.
