It's 2012, and we're kicked in full gear. We're preparing our ears for some of the most highly anticipated musical experiences of the season. FILTER decided to help you out with getting to know who will bring the buzz SXSW 2012, and we're predicting you'll be praising these picks by the end of the extravaganza in Austin.
The city of Montreal is one of Canada's finest gems when talking about the arts, especially the music scene. Young Galaxy is proof of the eclectic and every-changing sounds created in city. With Invisible Republic and Shapeshifting, Young Galaxy’s last two releases, the listener witnesses the build up of where duo Stephen Ramsay (guitars, vocals) and Catherine McCandless’ (keyboards, vocals) transform the mundane into the fantastic – catchy hooks build into epic crescendos, while political and ethical concerns share space with emotional observations. Listen to Young Galaxy's "Phantoms" below off of from the Shapeshifting Deluxe Edition.
Swedish duo Niki & The Dove are Malin Dahlström and Gustaf Karlöf started their project together back in 2010. As musicians and songwriters, Malin and Gustaf have taken their work to the next level with their great alt-pop tracks. With hits like "DJ, Ease My Mind" and "Under the Bridges" the band's promising distinctive electronic pop overlays should be held accountable for the earworm syndrome with Niki & The Dove. Their songs are full of magic and light but with an unsettling darkness hidden beneath the surface. Take a listen for yourself, below.
Asa Taccone and Matthew Compton--collectively known as Electric Guest-- Los Angeles natives will be making their debut at SXSW this year and are gearing up for their forthcoming release out on April 24. Much buzz has been coming from these guys, especially with the upcoming release Mondo that was produced by Danger Mouse-produced via Downtown Records. Take a listen to the band's infectious first single "This Head I Hold" below!
