SOUND OF CHANGE: SWIMWEAR. Swim? Where?

This past Tuesday officially marked the beginning of Summer, which means several things in our books - festivals, swimming pools, but most importantly, sun and the outdoors. This week, Ezra and Mac, a couple of our friends over at Rhythm's SoCal headquarters, give us a take on why we should be excited for summer. For more on Ezra and Mac's world, visit www.rhythmlivinusa.com.

Summer is officially here. Yeah, it may sound cliché but its true. Last Tuesday marked the beginning of summer ( hope you remembered to celebrate , it was also the longest day of the year ) which makes it time to get wet. Be it by kiddie pool, wave-riding, super soaker, or skating a drained out pool ( actually, that doesn’t get you wet at all however it remains a highly recommended summer activity ) we are all looking to make some memories with one of natures greatest creations, H2O. Without further adieu, we present to you the essential piece of apparel for endless aquatic adventures, THE BATHING SUIT. But First…

Cults - "Go Outside" from Cults (Sony, 2011)

Cults - Go Outside by Go Outside

WHY: Seriously, it’s good for you! Listen to Madeline Follin: “I think it's good to go out cause if you don't you'll never make a memory that will stay.” Word…

Brian Hyland - "Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie YELLOW POLKA DOT BIKINI" (Kapp Records, 1960)

WHY: Sequined Swimwear and Disco Lemonade.

Caribou - "Sun" from Swim (Merge, 2010)

WHY: sun. Sun. SUN.SUN!!! While June gloom can cause severe psychosis among sunlight-starved Southern Californians, take a second and listen to a track devoted to the ball of fire beyond the marine layer. According to the creator, Dan Snaith, aka Caribou, he sought to create "dance music that sounds like it's made out of water."  This illuminated musical concoction of psychadelics, minimal house beats, and straight, groovy funkiness sounds like Booka Shade hosting a subterranean beach-rave bonfire. Put on those disco-stubbies, slap on some Zinka, and ward off tanlines with this track that will keep you wigglin on your towel.

Caviar - "Tangerine Speedo" (Island Records, 2000)

Togs

WHY: Quickly! “Togs” are Kiwi (New Zealand) slang for speedos(bungy smugglers, banana hammocks, etc.), Trumpet ice-cream is seriously un-fucking-believable.

Vintage-inspired swimwear.

WHY: For dudes this means diving into the uncharted territories of above the knee trunks. We’re not advocating anything below 17” in length but asking you to give the knicker-length quasi basketball short look a rest and flash some thigh. Chicks will most definitely dig the groovy prints and we can guarantee that offerings like THE DUKE TRUNK will provide added maneuverability to your summer. Ladies, you’ll never hear us complaining about brazilian bottoms but lets see some unique onepiece numbers out there.

Nude.

WHY: Yes, the above verbiage was intended to provide you with some new ideas for summer swimwear and while this one goes definitively against just that, we back it. If you haven’t gone skinny dipping you owe it to yourself to ditch your drawers (or dress for that matter) and dive out into the great unknown. Find a pond, mountain stream, private pool, even go for a surf but leave the suit with your shoes and go for it. At the very least it will wake you right up.

There you have it, a guide to summer swimwear. We have provided you with all the advice we can think of and its getting hot in the office so as we head to the beach we advise you to GO GET WET!

Bonus: Trestles was taken by Pirates last week.

LNF: Lowers Raid! from Lastnamefirst.tv on Vimeo.

Necessary background info: Trestles is a jewel of Southern California surfing and is therefore one of the most crowded, localized, and aggravated spots to surf. Looks like the seniors from San Celemente high thought things were looking a little too serious.
