RECAP: Sailor Jerry Brings FILTER Backstage At FYF Fest With Descendents, Kid Dynamite, OFF! +More

Indie kids, hipsters, hardcore dudes, and old school punk lovers joined forces this past Saturday at the Los Angeles State Historic Park for the annual FYF Fest and we got the backstage treatment courtesy of Sailor Jerry.

While 20,000+ fans wandered the massive dirt/grass filled park, Sailor Jerry played host to some on-site tattooing and drinks via their trademark airstream trailer. Bands like Los Angeles' hardcore heavy hitters Touché Amoré popped in for some Sailor Jerry flash, courtesy of Tattoo artist Grant Cobb (@grantcobb1) who calls Spotlight Tattoo home with the one and only Bob Roberts, after rocking the stages to the masses. Ink virgin Bunny Love who works on the Bunny Ranch and stars on HBO's Cathouse stopped in to get her first ever tattoo who settled on a classic heart saying MUM and POPS. Other artists like Cults and Broken Social Scene stopped by to enjoy some 92 proof Rum...sans fresh ink though.

As for the festival, which was much more organized and free-flowing than last year, most people attended to see bands like Death From Above 1979, Explosions in the Sky, and of course, Southern California's own, The Descendents. All sets were wonderful in their own way, but it was the infamous Kid Dynamite that I was most excited about.
This is a band that has played only a handful of shows since disbanding around 2000, and most have been on the East Coast. Now here they were, on the small stage at FYF. Did these guys come out with a whimper and some slightly overdriven guitars? No way! From almost song one, singer Jason Shevchuk hopped down to the crowd and there he stayed the entire set, giving everyone a chance to sing along to their favorite songs. Kudos to these guys.
Of course the sets by OFF!, Title Fight, No Age, Broken Social Scene, and Guided By Voices (although fairly sloppy and out of tune), were all memorable, but it was Kid Dynamite...and The Descendents, that owned the festival for this guy.

Huge thanks to Sailor Jerry for letting us hang out and get a peak of the backstage shenanigans!
