Your father was a classical composer and you studied classical composition in school. How does this relate to or inspire your current work?
My dad is an incredibly large part of what I do and why I started doing it. Watching him make a living and support his family by writing music for movies and TV was a great example that this thing is possible.
You’ve said that some of your songs are written about the frustrations and judgments of establishing a career in the music industry. In recent years, your songs have appeared on numerous TV shows (90210, One Tree Hill, The Ghost Whisperer). Does this type of exposure have any effects on the way you write songs?
I've definitely found inspiration through the frustrations and struggles that come with going along this path. I don't know that having songs on television or movies necessarily changes the way I write, but it's nice to know that what I'm doing is somewhat relevant- that's always nice to know.
In anticipation for your new album, you’ll be touring the US and appearing in Canada this summer. What goes into you preparations for touring? Is there anything specific you want fans to expect from the record in terms of a new perspective or anything on the production side of things?
Prepping for tour typically goes like this: Get home from some other tour, throw everything from my suitcase into the laundry, squeeze in a few rehearsals between loads, pray that all the merch I sent across the country got there safely, repack the suitcase, maybe take a yoga class, and try not to miss my next flight.
I suppose my perspective has changed a bit since my last record, Fascinator. Those frustrations about making this business really work for me are being slowly eclipsed by my excitement for what's coming next. Being on the road has changed things for me- I realize what a rad life this is... And it's a nice thing to truly feel like you're doing what you're meant to do. I don't think everyone necessarily finds that place.
Hotel Café has developed a reputation as one of the most renowned music venues for intimate shows with singer-songwriters. As a seasoned performer in the space, have you noticed any changes in the venue or feel of being on that stage? What other venues have you enjoyed?
Hotel Cafe is a home away from home for me... from the venue itself, to the vast collection of friends I have found there. When I first started playing there about 4 years ago, it was intimidating to say the least, but as time has gone on I've found such support and love there that it's always my favorite place to play.
Another venue that I enjoy is one in Evanston, IL, just outside of Chicago, called Space. We just played there and had an incredible show. Can't wait to get back there...
Lastly, if you don’t mind, are there any interesting hobbies, secrets, habits we should know about to give our readers a little insider info on you?
A little insider info on me:
- I grew up as a ballerina- never thought I'd do anything but dance, until my parents said I had to go to college for something. Anything. So I picked music.... and that changed my life.
- Everything from the stuff on my coffee table to my merch table (or anyone else's merch table, for that matter) has to be at perfectly right angles. If it's not in it's right place, I HAVE to move it.
