OBSESSIVE COMPULSIONS: FILTER’s Weekly Picks
By Staff on December 3, 2012
FILTER likes music. There's no hiding it. We also like our own opinions a whole bunch, so once a week we give the masses a fleeting glimpse into our selective stereos and Internet browsers to let them see firsthand what fuels our endless devotion. We like to think of it as community service. We're selfless like that. So without further ado, here are the official, inarguable, objectively good FILTER Weekly Picks—providing everything from new LPs you should be spinning to the latest good-fer-you videos. Yeah, we're good at what we do:
Why: Don't be intimidated by its placement on the Starbucks counter, and therefore your parents' countertop. This is a dream come true for indie music fans with a penchant for holiday tunes who have played the Sufjan records one too many times. It doesn't get much sweeter than hearing Rufus Wainright and the always lovely Sharon Von Etten duetting on "Baby, It's Cold Outside." -- Samantha Barnes
Menomena - "Plumage"
Why: Because it's freaking hilarious and I wish I could juggle and walk at the same time...or just juggle. -- Angelica Corona
-- Alan Sartirana
-- Alan Miller
King Tuff - "Keep On Movin'"
Why: This album has been more or less on repeat. Grab your 3D glasses and feast your eyes on the video -- Will Overby
The Ramones - "Merry Christmas (I Don't Wanna Fight)"
Why: Seasonal stress got you on edge? Let Johnny, Joey and DeeDee help put the holidays in perspective with this festive tune. Loving this unconventional carol! -- Jacklyn Arding
Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams
Why: This may be a fat kid moment, but I'm ready to reveal my obsession with "Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams". They make crazy cool flavors like Bangkok Peanut and Riesling Poached Pear. The best part is, if you order 4 pints or more (and I mean, who would order less?) they can be delivered on ice nation wide! Check out the video introducing their latest Holiday flavor: Sweet Potato with Torched Marshmallows -- Sarah Chavey
CATCH ME IF YOU CAN on Blu-ray
Why: This Blu-ray release from Paramount includes a digitally remastered version of the film plus over an hour of bonus features that delve into the casting, filming and real-life story of the man who inspired the movie. Leo, Tom Hanks, Walken, Amy Adams, Martin Sheen...I mean, come on. -- Pat McGuire
Waxahatchee - "American Weekend"
Why: I totally missed out on this album when it came out. So much lost time! Is it too late to amend my top picks of the year? Check out the track "Be Good." It's good. -- Wes Martin
Paul McCartney and Wings - "Wonderful Christmastime"
Why: It's December and it's Paul McCartney. Enough Said. Also the terrible video quality and zany plot make this all the better to fall in love with. I dare you not to love it. -- Bailey Pennick
