OBSESSIVE COMPULSIONS: FILTER’s Weekly Picks

FILTER likes music. There's no hiding it. We also like our own opinions a whole bunch, so once a week we give the masses a fleeting glimpse into our selective stereos and Internet browsers to let them see firsthand what fuels our endless devotion. We like to think of it as community service. We're selfless like that. So without further ado, here are the official, inarguable, objectively good FILTER Weekly Picks—providing everything from new LPs you should be spinning to the latest good-fer-you videos. Yeah, we're good at what we do:

Bat For Lashes - The Haunted Man
Why: The new record is a bit more tame than the last, but still amazing. -Alan Sartirana

Iceland Airwaves 2012
Why: Had an amazing time in Reykjavik, which included seeing a bunch of great bands, eating countless hotdogs, drinking Reyka Vodka, meeting the mayor, and getting to see Sigur Ros live! -Mike Bell

Fairchild-Curtis lens (aka HAL) from 2001: A Space Odyssey

Stanley Kubrick exhibit at LACMA
Why: LACMA has just opened an amazing and extensive Stanley Kubrick exhibit, which showcases the genius filmmaker's methods both behind and in front of the camera. Whether or not you're a particular fan of the ol' ultra-violence or ominous black obelisks, the exhibit features a cinephile's dream of material from pre- and post-production—everything from annotated Lolita pages to Kubrick's personal chess set, not to mention a camera nerd's paradise of lenses. If you're in the LA area, it's a must-see. -Breanna Murphy

Gary Clark Jr. - "Ain't Messin' Around"
Why: If you don't dig this, you're not alive. Texas blues, something we've been lacking on the national stage for a while. Catch him live, it'll blow you away. -Wes Martin

Skyfall
Why: IT'S COMING. -Pat McGuire

Busy Beaver Button Company
Why: Christen's first clients were her pals Guided By Voices when she was still in college. Fast forward more than 15 years and they've made buttons for thousands of clients (including Threadless, Brooklyn Brewery, The Art Institute of Chicago, etc.). The "beaver dam" also houses a button museum and the world's larges button-o-matic machine. It's the cutest company ever, and you'll find their buttons on my jackets, bags, hats, etc. -Monique Gilbert

Renny Wilson - "Could've It Been Me?"
Why: This song is the perfect blend of the '70s and 2012. And I can't get enough. -Gianna Hughes
