OBSESSIVE COMPULSIONS: FILTER’s Weekly Picks

FILTER likes music. There's no hiding it. We also like our own opinions a whole bunch, so once a week we give the masses a fleeting glimpse into our selective stereos and Internet browsers to let them see firsthand what fuels our endless devotion. We like to think of it as community service. We're selfless like that. So without further ado, here are the official, inarguable, objectively good FILTER Weekly Picks—providing everything from new LPs you should be spinning to the latest good-fer-you videos. Yeah, we're good at what we do:

Debbie Carlos.
Why: A friend of mine recently forwarded me her site, and I bought a couple of prints I'll have framed.  I love her work, and right now it is sooooo reasonably priced. - Monique Gilbert

Royal Headache - "Royal Headache"
Why: It seems like every year, something comes across my desk from the previous year that I completely missed out on, and it completely blows me away. Well, it's happened this year already, and it's from Sydneysiders Royal Headache. This is straight up guitar punk without a wink or a nod. Pure awesome. Is it too late to amend last year’s Top 10? - Wes Martin

Built to Spill Live @ HARD ROCK  SD
Why: Because we present it  - Alan Sartirana

Time Traveling Through Your Parents' Garage
Why: I spent the weekend my folks' place where I was tasked with gathering together all my crap from 1986–present. Threatened with "take it with you or we're putting it on eBay" I now find myself the proud re-owner of some seriously classic gaming systems. Now, who wants to come over and play Crazy Taxi 2 on Dreamcast? It can get on the Internet (via Windows 95!), too, you guys. - Breanna Murphy

Puss In Boots
Why: Available from DreamWorks Animation on Blu-Ray/DVD combo pack, this swashbuckling romp stars the voices of Antonio Banderas, Salma Hayek, Zach Galifianakis, Billy Bob Thornton, Amy Sedaris and more. I am not ashamed to say that I find animated kids’ movies more enjoyable than 97% of the other “grown-up” movies being made today, and this Shrek prequel detailing the rise of Puss In Boots made me LOL consistently. And yes, I just said LOL. - Pat McGuire

American Teacher documentary

Why: Directed by Oscar-winner Vanessa Roth (Freeheld) and co-produced by Dave Eggers with narration by Matt Damon, this documentary about the plight of the modern day teacher in America is both eye-opening, heartbreaking and passionately optimistic. It’s no secret that teachers are undervalued, but this film focuses less on “why” and more on what is happening to make them leave their field… with a serious look to the future. Watch it and then write that letter to your 6th grade math teacher you’ve been putting off for years—and maybe even include a check with it. - Shane Ledford

Katsu
Why:

- Andrew Portwine

MUTEMATH - "Allies"

Why: MUTEMATH just released this video for "Allies" and it's a montage of their latest Odd Soul Tour. Of course it's nothing compared to the live experience (which is always... ALWAYS visually and aurally mind blowing), but you get a taste of the quality in production. these guys know how to put on a good show and seriously give 150% every night. how people haven't seen them live yet is beyond me... - Connie Tsang
