OBSESSIVE COMPULSIONS: FILTER’s Weekly Picks

FILTER likes music. There's no hiding it. We also like our own opinions a whole bunch, so once a week we give the masses a fleeting glimpse into our selective stereos and Internet browsers to let them see firsthand what fuels our endless devotion. We like to think of it as community service. We're selfless like that. So without further ado, here are the official, inarguable, objectively good FILTER Weekly Picks—providing everything from new LPs you should be spinning to the latest good-fer-you videos. Yeah, we're good at what we do:

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy
Why: I was fortunate to have a screener DVD of this highly confusing and at times unintelligibly British “who’s the mole” spy flick, which allowed me to rewind, use subtitles and pause to draw some diagrams. I’m not smart enough to have gotten it all in one fell swoop in the theater, so I’m not showing off by saying “it’s amazing and yes I understood every second”…it took a while. Gary Oldman leads the charge of this film’s top-tier British actors. You should be rooting for him to get his first and well-deserved Oscar. - Pat McGuire

Jawbreaker
Why: I'm still pissed I didn't go to the Jabberjaw show on Thanksgiving years back. WTF was I thinking. - Kyle Rogers

Whitney Houston - "I Wanna Dance With Somebody"
Why: In honor of Whitney - Sam Feld

Lilyhammer
Why: Netflix has officially jumped into the original series game with last week's debut of Lilyhammer starring Steven Van Zandt (The Sopranos & E-Street Band).  In a nutshell, the series focuses on an ex-mobster from NYC who goes into hiding in Lilyhammer, Norway because he liked what he saw from the 1994 Winter Olympics.  It's pretty funny and at 8 episodes, it's easy to watch over the course of a weekend.  People who hate subtitles might not enjoy because a majority of the dialogue is in Norwegian, but if you're willing to take a chance, it's quite an entertaining series.  Now bring on Arrested Development!!! - Mike Bell

April 15th

The Curse - EP
Why: Back when Warped Tour was fun, there used to be this stand-alone distro of a couple dudes who literally had every album you could want. I was on the hunt for the Strike Anywhere album Change is a Sound (which at the time was their only album) and one of the guys also suggested picking up this album from The Curse. He said "trust me, you'll like it. Plus it's only $5" I accepted and was greeted with a perfect mix of Kid Dynamite and The Loved Ones. Too bad it was such a short lived band. - Tim Dove

FUCT
Why: I was lucky enough to head out to Las Vegas this weekend to partake in some fun on and off the strip right as the MAGIC fashion trade show was kicking off.  Sometime between drink number two and twelve I was introduced to the clothing company FUCT.  It’s exciting to see a group of people really creating something unique, and doing it all themselves.  It takes balls for anyone to do and the attitude really shines through in the cloths they create.  Go check it out for yourself over at www.fuct.com.
The photo bellow that I took sums up my entire weekend pretty well.  I love Vegas.  I love Fuct. - Andrew Courtien
