††† (Crosses) at Glass House, Pomona, CA – 01/31/12
The following statement is true and probably embarrassing: In my 22 years living in Southern California and 12 years going to live shows, I have never seen a show at The Glass House in Pomona, CA. My friends think it’s quite unbelievable, but really, any band that I want to see live typically play in Los Angeles. I had questioned why ††† (Crosses) chose to play outside of a major show market, but it’s actually quite genius. For a band whose members are extremely well known (consisting of Shaun Lopez from Far and Chino Moreno from Deftones) the band itself is still a baby; a baby who has put out 2 EP’s in the last 5 months. Maybe it was a test to see how well they’d do on their first outing. They indirectly asked their fans to drive out to see them play. And guess what? They succeeded. They played a sold out show last night.

There was a lot riding on this show. Not only was it their very first appearance in front of a crowd, but their music is quite complicated to translate from the studio to the stage. A full week of non-stop rehearsing took place leading up to the show and even as the band took their place, you can kind of see the anticipation, the nervousness, the “calm before the storm” if you will. And then the music started. Chino sang his first words and he smiled. It doesn’t take long for a band and its fans to know whether or not they’re in for a treat or a train wreck. And as expected, all 800 fans at The Glass House last night were treated real well.

††† (Crosses) may only be testing the waters with just 3 more shows this week, but I think everyone last night can agree that this should by no means be treated as a side project. There is already a following and it’s steadily growing. Fans will crave more music and more shows, guaranteed. Everyone in San Diego will get a taste of the treat I got in tonight’s sold out show, but if you’re reading this and you are anywhere near Sacramento or San Francisco, make sure to secure a ticket now to catch them in action.
