Alex Brown Church of Sea Wolf has decided to thank his fans in one of the most satisfying of ways: by providing a full album available to download for free.
That's right. For free.
Today we're excited to share two sampler tracks from the album, titled Song Spells, No. 1: Cedarsmoke (the first in a series), that are a nice indicator of what the rest of this thank-you album will sound like.
"Cedarsmoke" is an instrumentally-riveting track filled with melancholy strings and storm-mimicking percussion. It blends into "Young Bodies," where the gentle plucking of an acoustic guitar accompanies Church's honeyed vocals as he croons about regret and betrayal.
Both tracks reflect that which is possibly the album's intent: melding darker tones with hopefulness, supporting rawer edges with a calming softness. The unrefined quality of Song Spells is the result of Church following his instincts as a musician and giving himself a shorter deadline to complete the LP in his own home, free of label expectations. Sea Wolf anticipates creating more free albums in the future inbetween official album releases.
Song Spells, No.1: Cedarsmoke will be available for free or pay-what-you-want download via the band's website July 15. A limited 500 copies of the physical album will also be available to the luckiest early birds.
