Across the U.S., we've been experiencing quite the rain-pour. We rounded up a few friends over at Rhythm's SoCal headquarters to help us curate a list of things that encompass these type of rainy days, ways to optimize your time spent indoors.
Rain heavily effects the lives of all creative minds hedged within surfing, music, skating, snowboarding, photography, art, essentially everyone. We have reached out to numerous advocates from differing regions of the planet to see what they are listening to, practicing, doing, in essence how rainy days inspire them in different ways from other weather.
Sit inside. Drink your coffee.
LISTEN TO: Blur - "Sweet Song" from Think Tank (2003)
WHY: Read a book for so long your arms hurt. Sit on a creaky bench and play a piano that has seen more of life than your grandparents.Try to read her signs. Answer a text. Drop your phone in a puddle. Or that fresh cup you poured.Fight with the ivory. Persuade it to transcribe the notes in your head. Set the tempo to the dripping off the rafters.Give up when what you see in your mind doesn't exist. It will never be the way you pictured. Apologize. Take a break. Return with raindrops in your hair and musty smoke on your clothes. Touch her again. Lose complete track of time, space, condition, situation. Find the sound in your head and conquer it. Smile exhaustingly. Let this be your soundtrack… - Ezra Pine
So Pitted.
WHY: “Dude, you just get the best barrels ever dude. It’s just like, you pull in and then you just get spit right outta ‘em. You just drop in, just smack the lip – and then after that, you just drop in. Saa-BAAH! Drop down…Saa-BAAAH! Ride the barrel and get pitted. Ride the barrel and get pitted. So pitted.” If that means skimboarding your local flooded street corner in SoCal or a flooded grazing field in Vermont, then consider those words sage wisdom for a rainy day. - deciphered by Keenan Cawley
400 Knots Onshore.
LISTEN TO: Joy Divison - "New Dawn Fades" (live)
WHY: Well this all depends on what time of day God decides to piss his pants. Wake up and it's raining…throwing my leg over the misses and continue to drown in my doona. Midday rain…a bit of a tear jerking melodic tune from Joy division or midlake usually fills the void. Afternoon storm…after checking the surf cams and realizing what I already knew, that it's 400 knots onshore is just the perfect segway into my 2hr 45min drive north on the 405 where for some reason every driver in Southern California takes on the characteristics of the wicked witch of the west from Oz…they all MELT. - Jai Christophe
Enjoy It.
LISTEN TO: Angus & Julia Stone - "Just a Boy" (Live on Morning Becomes Eclectic)
WHY:Many of us are eager for sun but personally I enjoy a rainy day. It gives you a moment to slow down and relax from the crazy world around us. It's a natural phenomenon that forces you to look internally. It inspires you to find happiness within and not externally. Personally, on a showery day nothing sounds better than curling up on the couch with a good book or movie. If I am jamming some tunes on a rainy day its most likely going to be something a little more emo like some Angus and Julia Stone. I tend to stay in on rainy days over here but when I am home in HI it’s the perfect opportunity to go out and get some waves when everyone’s bundled up inside. - Zach Arreola

Cut Your Hair.
WHY: If it’s raining, winter is probably over. At least it’s warm enough to chop off those “natty locks” and let your headquarters breathe. Slip some scissors on and start cutting. If a friend offers to aid you in the back, accept the offer. However, don’t be afraid to attempt the back of your head solo - it can only make the chop-shop in the front look better. - Keenan Cawley

500 Pound Recluse.
WHY: I would be doing the same thing I do any other day of the week. It’s rain. You’re not going to melt because of it, unless you are in Los Angeles where it is probably somewhat acidic. I come from Vermont, it rains a lot there. If I stayed cooped up inside my house any time it rained I would probably end up as a 500 pound recluse. Mother nature may be a distant relative, but I’m not going to let her tell me what to do. - Laura Austin
