By Staff on December 18, 2013
When it comes to end-of-year lists, it's definitely not all about us; we love to know what our favorite musicians and artists have been digging the most out of 2013, too, and we're thrilled to share those lists here.
After an 18-year hiatus, we had the privilege of seeing the iconic LA band, Medicine, play our Culture Collide this year. The band also released their LP, To The Happy Few, making for a great return. Brad Laner tells us what were his favorite releases this year below!
Brad Laner's Top Ten of 2013:
1. Master Musicians of Bukakke, Far West
"The true heirs to the Sun City Girls legacy, but so much more as well."
2. Allesandro Cortini, Forse 2
"A bit more "out" than the first volume, but more of the same fabulous and melodic solo synth jams."
3. Mike Wexler, Dispossession
"I think this may have come out in 2012, but it's one of my favorites to listen to from the past year. Light and mysterious, great guitar picking. Reminds me of Enos' obscure records series."
4. Mathématiques Modernes, Les Visiteurs Du Soir (reissue)
"Incredible prog-new wave re-issue from the best electronic re-issue label around.
5. Gelbart, World War One Hamster Diorama
"Weirdo Zappa-esque bedroom madness from Germany. Is good."
6. The Stargazer Lilies, We Are The Dreamers
"What your so-called shoegaze is supposed to sound like. Indelible melodies and singing plus great guitar work."
7. Wild Nothing, Empty Estate EP
"Best thing yet from my esteemed label-mates. Can't wait to hear what comes next.
8. Frank Zappa's 200 Motels performed live by the Los Angeles Philharmonic
"This was a major mind-blower. So very well done, can't wait for the recording to come out."
9. Marcos Valle's 4-LP reissues on Light In The Attic
"Simply the best music ever made. I've turned everybody i know on to these records and they've all been changed forever."
10. Celestial Shore, 10x
"Kids with terrifying skills tripping over their pop chops and we all win."
