In his new video for “You’re Not Good Enough,” Blood Orange (Dev Hynes) shows off some impressive dance moves under the directorial tutelage of Gia Coppola.
Coppola is the ultimate Hollywood scion (niece of Sophia, granddaughter of Francis Ford, cousin to Jason Schwartzman), and Hynes is the effortlessly cool master of sultry, retro pop—it’s a collaborative team that dreams are made of. The two have been working together for some time now, with Hynes scoring the soundtrack to Coppola's feature directorial debut Palo Alto, which features "You're Not Good Enough."
Shot in a soft focus haze, there’s a tinge of '80s glamour to the video, with the dancers in sporty spandex and Hynes’ girlfriend Samantha Urbani in the sort of boxy leather jacket that Sloane from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off would be proud of.
Hynes’ is impossibly smooth in every way, from his perfectly timed falsetto peaks to his “not-even-trying” style of moonwalking. It’s that air of nonchalance that makes Blood Orange even more appealing—he doesn’t care if his skills impress you, but he knows deep down that they will.
We love what Gia and Dev are cooking up, and you can check out our feature on their creative exploits in the latest issue of FILTER, on newsstands now!
