MP3: Cuff the Duke is “Smothered in Hugs” (Guided by Voices Cover) (FILTER Premiere)

Cuff the Duke reigns from Oshawa, Ontario and are Toronto-based, bringing alt-country to the masses via Paper Bag Records. The band is preparing for their fifth album release Morning Comes out February 28 (via Paper Bag Records), and has teamed up with us at FILTER to present a collection of covers found in their EP In Our Time. Each week we'll be premiering one track off the EP in anticipation for the forthcoming full length! Last week, we premiered Cuff the Duke's cover of a Smog track "Cold Blooded Old Times." Today we present the band's cover of the Guided by Voices tune "Smothered in Hugs." Read a few words from the band below.

Cuff the Duke, "Smothered In Hugs" (Covering Guided by Voices) by FILTER Magazine

"I bought the album Bee Thousand on vinyl (white vinyl) when I was in high school after hearing it at a party. Up until that point I had never heard anything quite like Guided By Voices. Every song was a "hit" to me. The songs were so catchy and interesting and the production was so lo-fi. From the opening track 'Hardcore UFO's' to 'You're Not An Airplane' it was four track gold to me. The song that grabbed my attention the most that night at the party was 'Smothered In Hugs.' It's one of those songs that I never get sick of hearing to this day. We recorded our version live off the floor...vocals and all and our friend Bob Egan played the pedal steel." - Cuff the Duke
