MP3: Cuff The Duke Cover The Bee Gees “I’ve Gotta Get A Message To You” (Filter Premiere)

For the next installment in our series of cover songs from Toronto based band  Cuff The Duke, we share their cover of The Bee Gees “I’ve Gotta Get A Message To You” off their covers EP In Our Time II, after last years release In Our Time which featured covers of songs by John Lennon, Guided By Voices, Sonic Youth and more.

Much like the Bee Gees, Cuff The Duke is able to make this song feel lighter than its heavy subject matter would seem to allow. Cuff The Duke does a great job carrying out the harmonies on the song, which might be difficult for a lot of artists trying to take on a cover of The Bee Gees. The band holds true to the original but also adds just enough of their own back room country twang to it to make it their own and work within this collection of songs.

Check out the cover of “I’ve Got To Get A Message To You” as well as why they chose this song below! Also be sure to pick up Cuff The Duke's latest release Union via Paper Bag Records now!

"I've Gotta Get A Message To You", A few years ago I picked up the Bee Gee's first few albums. Admittedly, they were a band I had sort of written off but their early records were amazing 60's pysch-pop albums. I got really into them for awhile as did the other guys. We went back and forth trying to decide what song of theirs we were going to record and eventually decided on this one. It's about a guy on death row (because he murdered his wife's lover) and he's pleading to try and get a message to his wife before he's executed. Not your typical Bee Gee's song subject matter.
