Toronto-based Cuff the Duke have been sharing with you some great covers these last couple of weeks. While bringing alt-country to the masses via Paper Bag Records, the band is preparing for their fifth album release Morning Comes out February 28 (via Paper Bag Records), and has teamed up with us at FILTER to present a collection of covers found in their EP In Our Time. This week we've premiering the next track off the EP in anticipation for the forthcoming full length! Today we present the band's cover of the Dum Dum Girls track "Always Looking." Read a few words from the band below.
We also would like to congratulate Cuff the Duke for their Juno Award Nomination in Canada for Adult Alternative album of the year! Great work fellas!
"A friend of mine, who works at a record label, got an advance of Only In Dreams by the Dum Dum Girls. He knew I was a fan and passed it along to me. (I should mention that I did buy it on vinyl when it was released a couple weeks later.) We had started working on some covers so I played a version of Always Looking, for the rest of the guys, that I thought we could try. They suggested putting a totally different feel to it. The result was a version of the song that we all thought was very much our own. Instead of the heavier garage pop sound of the Dum Dum Girls it was a bit more of an "Up on Cripple Creek" kinda vibe.
