Back in January, Los Angeles-based four-piece Hands released a 7” single featuring “I Want to Know” and “Exactly Sharp” on White Iris. We’ve had both songs on our go-to playlist since then, and though they haven’t gotten old, we’re beyond thrilled that the alt-rockers have finally announced a date for their debut full-length. Synesthesia will be released on April 30 via Kill Rock Stars. To give us a little taste of what’s to come, they also shared their new single, “The Game Is Changing Us,” a lighthearted, upbeat track that drips with summertime.
The guys of Hands have a niche for blending instruments and electronics to create a certain dynamism that renders genre categorization practically impossible, and this is especially evident in “The Game Is Changing Us.” With its looping vocals, punchy guitar riffs, thumping bass, frenetic drumming, and technical tempos, "The Game Is Changing Us" could be alt-rock, danceable indie rock, synth-pop…the list goes on. It sounds like Animal Collective’s bubbly, more relatable cousin with a hint of Hot Chip and Tanlines. Decide for yourself and stream the track below.
And if you find yourself in Austin next week, make sure to catch Hands at one of their many SXSW shows, which are listed below.
