IDEAL SITUATION FOR SOMEONE TO LISTEN TO OUR MUSIC
In a car.
WORST SHOW EVER
It was on this last tour in Lucerne, Switzerland, and we played outside in a park to a few people. The power for my pedals blew up. A street musician with an accordion walked up right before we started to play and we started jamming with him, but I was also trying to get him to leave so we could start the set. I’ve had some really horrible shows where the sound guy tells me I am playing too loud and I have to be basically inaudible.
BEST SHOW EVER
In August, we played a small, one-day festival in Lecce, Italy. We flew from Copenhagen to Rome and then transferred to Brindisi Airport. When we landed, our bass and cymbals didn’t come with us. We waited at the airport for the next flight to arrive and finally the bass came but the cymbals didn’t. Our Italian friend Jacopo drove us to the festival, we all fell asleep on the ride and when we woke up we were in a vineyard and an old woman was telling us to drive through this dirt road. At the end of the dirt road was a big festival stage in this guy’s backyard and the promoter ran a recording studio at his family home. We didn’t play until around three or four in the morning right before Laetitia Sadier from Stereolab. The show was amazing because over 1,000 people came that were vacationing in the south of Italy. Right at the beginning of the set, I plugged in my pedals and all of the power in the entire compound turned off. Then I tried again, plugging my pedals into a different outlet and they worked. Miraculously, we played a great set and then proceeded to party until the sun came up. The south of Italy is amazing. Later on in the night, Sam [Franklin, drummer] and I spent about an hour trying to get into this bed and breakfast where we were staying. We were both covered in sweat and slept in this hot room with an AC that barely worked. It was an incredible time.
LEAST FAVORITE THING IN THE WORLD
When the sound guy at a venue plays a band that he or she thinks sounds similar to us after we play a set. A lot of times it's just Tame Impala or The Doors.
WE'LL KNOW WE'VE MADE IT WHEN...
I have a sandwich named after me. "The Mondanile." This sandwich would consist of rye bread, Swiss cheese and some turkey with mustard. Also some avocado and alfalfa sprouts.
3 Albums that inspired Ducktails to make music
On The Beach
THERE IS NOTHING TO SAY THIS RECORD IS THE BEST.
Yo La Tengo
I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One
This record is a really good example of how one album can sound like its own entire universe environment.
The Wooden Cupboard
Boiling the Animal in the Sky
This record is some of the earliest James Ferraro work. It has the most organic and emotive sound to it. I listened to this so many times, it really influenced me a lot.
