10 Years of FILTER: Issue #19 Revisited, Getting To Know Arctic Monkeys

2012 marks FILTER Magazine's tenth year in print. To celebrate, we are looking back at some of our favorite magazine features, from July 2002’s Issue #1 all the way up to this coming November’s Issue #50.

Getting To Know is a section in the magazine that serves as a good gauge for our predictions of greatness. In FILTER ISSUE #19, released Winter 2006, we introduced the English indie rock quartet, Arctic Monkeys. Here is a brief look at the band, then and now.

Band: Arctic Monkeys

Where They Were Then: Story goes that the Arctic Monkeys got their start after their fans uploaded the band’s homemade album, Beneath the Boardwalk, to Myspace, which in turn attracted the attention of Domino owner Lawrence Bell. After eventually signing with Domino and recording their debut full-length album Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not, the band set out on a string of highly successful international tours.

Where They Are Now: Although the band’s founding bassist Andy Nicholson quit shortly after the release of their debut album, the band regrouped and carried on releasing three more full-length albums, winning every music award for which they were nominated and headlining just about everything.

They Said: “It’s crazy that in the midst of all this pop formula bollocks, [“I Bet You Look Good on the Dance Floor”] could still sell a couple thousand records more than anyone else’s.”

FILTER Said: Only two years after playing their first gig, the band signed with Domino Records (home of Franz Ferdinand, Clearlake, Hood) and a few months later, they had a hit. “I Bet You Look Good on the Dance Floor” is a rabble-rousing anthem with the urgency of a Johnny Cash coke ode matched to a stomping beat and kinetic guitar riff worthy of public convulsions.
